Italian Boxer Angela Carini Abandons Fight at Olympics
Carini Cites Emotional Distress After Father's Death
Paris, France - August 2, 2024 - AP
Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from her fight against Imane Khelif of Algeria just 46 seconds into the first round at the Paris Olympics, citing emotional distress following the recent loss of her father and coach.
Carini, who had been aiming for a medal to honor her late father, appeared visibly shaken before the fight began. She reportedly burst into tears as soon as the bell rang, prompting the referee to stop the contest.
Khelif, who was disqualified from the 2023 women's world championships for using performance-enhancing drugs, expressed sympathy for Carini's situation.
"I'm sorry that she had to go through this," Khelif said. "I can't imagine what it must be like to lose a loved one, especially right before a major competition."
Carini has since broken her silence on the incident, giving an emotional interview where she spoke about her father's passing and the impact it has had on her.
